OVERVIEW
Established in November 2024, the annual Nigeria Food Surplus Summit is promoted by REVENUE Magazine and organized by its parent company, Alford Conferences Limited. The summit is a nationwide advocacy to help Nigeria to successfully feed itself and have a large surplus for export. by strengthening the commercial farming, food processing, agricultural mechanization, and commercial bank lending segments of the country’s agricultural industry. For decades, up till this present moment, the burden of feeding this country of over 230 million people has rested largely on the shoulders of its millions of smallholder farmers. The summit seeks to strongly complement this by advocating for commercial farming, food processing, agricultural mechanization, and commercial bank lending on a much larger and extensive scale throughout the federation. We engage actively with the government on this program, especially the ministry of agriculture of the 36 states and FCT. The event draws inspiration from the Netherlands, the second largest agricultural exporter in the world today, next to the United States of America.
1ST NIGERIA FOOD SURPLUS SUMMIT 2024
For the 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit 2024, we sought the Strategic Event Partnership of Standup for Women Society (SWS) for the event, and it was promoted and publicized with the goodwill of this pan-Nigerian NGO. We received exhibition support for the event from Teemar Farms Integrated Agroservices Limited. The highpoint of the summit was the publication of the first ever report titled “Commercial Bank Lending to the Nigerian Agricultural Industry 2018-2022.” The 12 commercial banks captured in the maiden edition of this report were Access Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, FBN Holdings Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, FCMB Group Plc, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc and Wema Bank Plc. Collectively these 12 banks lent N4.68 trillion to the Nigerian agricultural industry during this five years period. The report which presented data and insights on lending by selected Nigerian commercial banks to the country’s agricultural industry over the past five years (January 2018-December 31, 2022) was presented to the media via a press statement on August 30, 2024. The maiden edition of the summit announced the Nigerian Agribusiness Awards in three categories: Nigeria Agribusiness Finance Awards, Nigerian Agribusiness Governor of the Year Award, and Nigerian Agricultural Mechanization Award. The winners of the Nigeria Agribusiness Finance Awards were in two segments: the top 5 biggest commercial bank lenders to the Nigerian agricultural industry from 2018-2022 (Access Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc), and the top 5 biggest lenders to the industry as a percentage of their total lending from 2018-2022 (Ecobank Nigeria Limited, Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, FCMB Group Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, and Access Holdings Plc). The winner of the Nigerian Agribusiness Governor of the Year Award was Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State. The Nigerian Agricultural Mechanization Award went to Bobtrack Tractor Limited, the first indigenous producer of tractors and tractor accessories in Nigeria.
