1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit 2024

OVERVIEW
On behalf of Alford Conferences Limited/REVENUE Magazine, and the summit Strategic Event Partner (Standup for Women Society, SWS), we are pleased to invite you to participate in the 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit, slated for Abuja, FCT, November 20-22, 2024. You can participate as a partner, sponsor, exhibitor, advertiser, speaker, summit delegate, award guest, journalist, etc. The annual summit seeks to help Nigeria to successfully feed itself and have a large surplus for export by strengthening the commercial farming, food processing, and agricultural machinery segments of the country’s agricultural industry. For decades, up till this present moment, the burden of feeding this country of over 220 million people has rested largely on the shoulders of its millions of smallholder farmers. The summit seeks to strongly complement this by deliberately promoting and boosting commercial farming, food processing, and the production of agricultural machinery on a large scale in each of the 36 states and FCT, partnering actively with their respective ministry of agriculture.

COMMERIAL BANK LENDING TO THE NIGERIAN AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY 2018-2022
On August 30, 2024, we published a special report titled, “Commercial Bank Lending to the Nigerian Agricultural Industry 2018-2022” which presents data and insights on lending by selected Nigerian commercial banks to the country’s agricultural industry over the past five years: January 2018-December 31, 2022. The 12 commercial banks captured in this report are Access Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, FBN Holdings Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc, Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, FCMB Group Plc, Stanbic IBTC Holdings Plc, Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, Union Bank of Nigeria Plc and Wema Bank Plc. Collectively these 12 banks lent N4.68 trillion to the Nigerian agricultural industry during this five years period. Copies of this report would be circulated to delegates at the summit.

PRE-SUMMIT NATIONWIDE BRIEFING 2024
Ahead of the inaugural edition of this summit, we have embarked on a briefing for the 36 states and FCT, sensitizing them to mobilize various stakeholders in their respective domains for the event. This briefing, in collaboration with Standup for Women Society (SWS), is ongoing from September 9-October 31, 2024. An official delegation of the ministry of agriculture of these states is expected to attend the summit, and showcase major bankable projects and initiatives in their domains at the event.

NIGERIAN AGRIBUSINESS AWARDS 2024
A major highpoint of the 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit 2024 will be the Nigerian Agribusiness Awards which would be presented in the following eight categories. Altogether, we plan to honour and celebrate 159 young farmers, universities that have made a strong mark in agribusiness within their campus, state governors at the forefront of agricultural industry transformation in their respective domains, the top commercial bank lenders to the Nigerian agricultural industry, selected agricultural trade associations, and other individuals at the event. The Nigerian Agribusiness 100 Awards will honour and celebrate 100 young farmers in Abuja metropolis and the rest of the across the FCT, the host state of the annual summit. In 2025, this award category will be expanded to cover the rest of the North Central Zone. In 2026, we will expand it further to cover the Northern Region of Nigeria. And in 2027, the award will cover the entire country. These young farmers, with hundreds and thousands of them scattered across the federation, are the future of our country’s agricultural transformation and prosperity. The Nigerian Agribusiness University Awards goes to four universities from each the six zones. The Nigerian Agribusiness State Governor of the Year in Awards goes to two recipients from each of the six zones. The Nigeria Agribusiness Finance Awards will be presented to the top 5 biggest commercial bank lenders to the Nigerian agricultural industry from 2018-2022: Access Holdings Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria Limited, United Bank for Africa Plc, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc), as well as to the top 5 biggest lenders to the industry as a percentage of their total lending from 2018-2022: Ecobank Nigeria Limited, Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc, FCMB Group Plc, Zenith Bank Plc, and Access Holdings Plc. The Nigerian Agribusiness Trade Association Awards (10 recipients altogether), The others are the Nigerian Agribusiness Person of the Year Award, the Nigerian Agricultural Mechanization Award, and the Nigerian Agribusiness Lifetime Achievement Award.

POST-EVENT: NORTHERN NIGERIA AGRIBUSINESS FINANCE FORUM 2024
One of the post-event activities of the 1st Nigeria Food Surplus Summit 2024 is the proposed Northern Nigeria Agribusiness Finance Forum. It would be held annually in rotation among the three geopolitical zones of North West, North East and North Central. The forum seeks to substantially raise the volume of commercial bank lending to bankable agribusiness companies and projects across the 19 states of Northern Nigeria and the FCT. Because the North produces the bulk of the food eaten in the entire federation, far more funding ought be devoted to commercial farming and food processing in this region of the country. Side by side the current renewed efforts by several Northern state governors to solve the insecurity in the region, we advocate that the commercial banks should deliberately step up their intermediation in support of food production in the region.
