PROMOTING GREATER COLLABORATION AMONG THE LARGEST BANKS IN EUROPE, MIDDLE EAST AND AFRICA
The portion of the world called EMEA comprises Europe, Middle East and Africa. These three regions have a contiguous geography. But beyond this, they also have strong historical, cultural, religious and imperial links binding them together. We have found it important to encourage a closer and greater collaboration among the most important banks in the leading economies of this portion of the world. This has led us to establish EMEA Banking Awards, an annual celebration of the biggest banks (ranked by total assets) in the region. In designating the 50 countries for this award program, we selected the 25 largest economies in Europe, the 10 largest economies in the Middle East, and the 15 largest economies in Africa.
In Europe these countries are Germany, UK, France, Russia, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Switzerland, Poland, Sweden, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, Austria, Denmark, Romania, Czech Republic, Finland, Portugal, Kazakhstan, Greece, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia and Bulgaria in that order.
IN THE MIDDLE EAST
In the Middle East they are Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Israel, UAE, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Jordan in that order.
And in Africa the list comprises Nigeria, Egypt, South Africa, Algeria, Morocco, Angola, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, DR Congo, Uganda, Tunisia and Cameroon in that order.
PERMANENT HOST CITY
In choosing a permanent host country for this annual event, we considered several possibilities in EMEA, and finally settled for Switzerland, principally because of its well-established global banking and finance ecosystem. We have chosen Zurich as the permanent host city of EMEA Banking Awards mainly because it is the home of most of the principal banks in Switzerland. The inaugural EMEA Banking Awards will celebrate the top three largest banks in the designated countries for the year in question. In each of them we shall also select a banker of the year, a development finance bank/agency of the year, as well as the most tech-driven bank of the year. Mark your diary: October 26, 2023.
